Red Poultry Mite
Key Features
Red Poultry Mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) are tiny (0.7 mm) arachnid organisms, and are external parasites of chickens and
turkeys. Red Poultry mites are therefore normally found to infest poultry houses, although they can be found in association with
feral pigeon problems. Red Poultry mites feed by sucking blood, mainly at night, and may transmit fowl cholera and other
diseases.
In the absence of birds, will bite and drink the blood of other animals, including man.
Biology
Under favourable conditions the life cycle of the mite can be completed within seven days, so populations can grow rapidly,
causing anaemia in badly affected flocks of poultry.
Distribution
Worldwide, in heated poultry sheds.
Significance
Causes significant problems in poultry sheds. Egg production can be adversely affected, and cannabilistic pecking can occur
when infestations are heavy.
Control
Control is often difficult to attain. A planned survey using insect monitors and night inspection will reveal areas of infestation.
These should then be treated with insecticides using a full crack & crevice method. Diatomaceous Earth can be an effective
treatment in dry areas.
